We've got photographs of men on the moon, We've got water that is good for us, We've got coffee that's instantaneous, We've got buildings that are very tall, We've got cigarettes that are low in tar, We've got policemen can tell us who we are, We can reproduce a work of art, We've got missiles can tear the world apart, Good, good, good, good, good, good technology. We've got trains that run underground, Aeroplanes that fly very fast, We've got music that is popular, We've got machines that sound like orchestras, We've got ability to transplant a heart, We've got freezers full of body parts, We've got computers that can find us friends, We know roughly when the world will end, Good, good, good, good, good, good technology. We've got animals with transistors in, We've got pills that can make you slim, We've got factories turning frozen chickens out, We've got ovens that cook in seconds flat, We've got plastics that are indestructible, We've got deodorants that make us smell of flowers, We've got detergents to clean up the sea, We've got sounds can turn you inside out! (guitar solo) Sometimes I wonder what it is all about? There's lots of leisure time to sit and work it out. There's a TV show I've got to see, Good, good, good, good, good, good technology, Good technology.

Fact 04:28
For those of us with dented pride, Who never reached the top. I never lost my fear of flying, Or witnessed thousands fall away and drop. Cradled like a peak too far, You've got to toe the line. A miser with a silver spoon, Take the profit out of doom. Take the profit out of war, We don't need it anymore. Pull the curtain wide, Dispel the gloom, Chase the blues away. Facts are facts and railway tracks, Run parallel to the sky. Overcome gravity like we overcome graffiti with graffiti of our own. A miser in a lead-lined room, Take the profit out of doom. Take the profit out of war, We don't need it anymore. A cold wind blows and commerce flows, On lines of clear confusion. Ground-to-air and dust to dust, The sirens croon collusion, A whispered word a bitter cry, The dividend is due. Dismiss the light the time is right, For nuclear transfusion. Take the profit out of war, We don't need it anymore.

Steeltown 04:20
I hear the steeltown is closing down, All the mills are rusting. Everybody's got a new car, With the redundancy money they pay. Things are looking grim, See the wolves, they're closing in. It doesn't matter how I vote, The same confederacy of fools get in. Eh-arrumba sing a simple song, Steeltown is closing down. Steel is the backbone, Of every modern nation. Mills are closing down, There's an end to moderation. The pound is coming down, Economy's inflating. People on the streets, It's the second industrial revolution. Eh-arrumba sing a simple song, Steeltown is closing down. Steal away a steeltown, Steal away a way of life.

Paris France 05:30
I met a girl in Paris, France, An Irish girl I met by chance. She said come to Paris, France, And we can do the Paris dance. You put your hand out in the night - Paris, France You take a seat on the midnight flight. You take the third door on the right - Paris, France walls are blue the ceiling's white. Don't worry 'bout the autonome - Paris, France No one here is anyone. I was young but that's all gone - Paris, France I never think of what I've done. Susy that's an Irish name Susy that's a Paris game All I want is love and fame Susie do you want the same? You put your hand out in the night, You take a seat on the midnight flight You take the third door on the right Walls are blue the ceiling's white. I met a girl - Paris, France An Irish girl She said come to Paris, France, And we can do the, do the Paris dance. Paris, France, do the Paris France dance Paris, France, chassé down the Champs Elysee Paris, France, do the Paris, France oo-la-la Paris, France. Do the France dance like a railway train Do the France dance in the pouring rain White lights flashing in the Paris night I dance the Left bank and you dance the right Spin like a dervish and you'll feel no pain Watch your step or you'll dance in Seine And you go ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-aah Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-aah Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-aah Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-aah Do the France dance in the pouring rain Do the France dance like a railway train Do the France dance in the Paris rain Do the France dance or you'll go insane...

Lost my friend to knitting, lost my nerve for crime. Lost my sense of direction, wasted so much time. I though I had a duty, to put myself about. Saw my life in colour, when the reality is black and white. Sung my song of sorrow, squeezed my memory dry. Time to ring the changes, my but don't time fl-y! Do it or don't do it do it right, or give your life to others. Do it or don't do it do it right, forget the colours. So take yourself in hand, bleach the colours from your mind. Remember what I told you and live in black and white. Don't try to live in colour, save it for your dreams. These four walls that surround me, surround you to - oh yes they do, yes they do! Life within, life within four walls. Life within, life within four walls. These four walls surround me, four walls close me in.

From the twelve tribes of Israel to the Beverley High Road, Learning once again that the English speak in code, Returning to your quiet life and your red brick reverie, While up in the Blue Mountains, bodies freeze. Forgive me for auditioning, for looking for a role, Your stock in trade is reality and we play rock and roll. Jamaican homecoming, Jamaican home truths, Jamaican homecoming, Jamaica is coming home. See Regatta d’Blanc go laughing to the bank, See Regatta d’Blanc go laughing to the bank.

I can't take what you don't offer - oh no And I don't believe that you don't suffer I can't take what you don't offer I don't believe that you don't suffer Must have lost the thread of things Lost the chance to cut the strings And if you asked I'd swing, I'd swing for you Remote control A green light shines out over the water I won't try to say that my motives were faultless And I can't deny you remind me of someone less thoughtless And when I lay my head on your shoulder You looked away, made me stand so much firmer You stand alone in my estimation You stand alone in my expectations You stand alone and I will swing for you You stand alone and I'm fierce proud of you You stand alone, you're a law unto yourself You stand alone Remote control A green light shines out over the water A green light shines out over the water

Dive 03:07
I'm flying southward in a silver airplane, I'm flying on my own. I left my baby in the cold and the rain, She didn't want to know. The sky is falling and there's nowhere to go, I feel it weighing on my soul. I cup the ember of my last cigarette, I crush it under foot - oh yes I do. Dive! The sky is falling and there's nowhere to go, I feel it weighing on my soul. You trace my footsteps in the frost on your lawn, I leave with the rising sun. The radio does play, some sweet forgotten melody, Reminds you of me...Dive! I'm flying southward in a silver airplane, I'm flying on my own - solo, I left my baby in the cold and the rain, She didn't want to know. Won't you come follow me, won't you come follow me, Follow me down. Won't you come follow me, won't you come follow me, Won't you come follow me, won't you come follow me down. The radio does play, some sweet forgotten melody, Reminds you of me. "Sweet Jane" the airways carry your name, "Sweet Jane" reminds me of you, And I love you, yes I do. Down, down, down, down, Down, down, down, down, Down, down, down, down, Dive!

Astronomy 03:26
Take the things that you're dreaming of Fit them to the scheme of the stars above Do it right and it might and it might show you ways To read between the lines of what your baby says The lights that light the end of the evening Mark the edge between waking and dreaming And electric-fingered light dislocates the night When will the sky grow clear? Katy told a story but Katy lied She trusted in a future on the other side And Katy had a mother used to sit her on her knee And sing la-de-la-de-la-de-la-de-la, la-de-la-de-la Oh - looking for adventure with the living dead And "Pull the curtains tight" were the words she said And let me run my fingers through your short dark hair Send shudders down your backbone, shivers through the air The lights that light the end of the evening Mark the edge between waking and dreaming And electric fingered light dislocates the night When will the sky grow clear? The Plough, the Pole star and the Plaeides Dance around their handbags, singularities Let me run my fingers through your short dark hair Read between the lines of what your baby said The lights that light the end of the evening Mark the edge between waking and dreaming And electric fingered light dislocates the night When will the sky grow clear? The lights that light the end of the evening Mark the edge between waking and dreaming And electric-fingered light dislocates the night When will the sky grow clear?

Baby's in the circus now, Touring in the sticks, Left me in the city, And went to look for kicks. I'm walking the pavement, Watching the stars, Caught in the headlights, Of the passing cars. The sun don't shine for me now, The rose don't bloom, no, no, no, Since my baby left me, The sun don't shine no more. I thought we had a good thing, A love as safe as houses, I always kept my shoes shined, And creases in my trousers. What did she see, To make her leave me? I'm in the dark. The sun don't shine for me now, The rose don't bloom, no, no, no, Since my baby left me, The sun don't shine no more. I believe in honesty, Sweetness, light and reason, I don't believe in lechery, In lying, spite and treason. Here I am on bended knee, And armed against these vices, All alone, heartbroken, Left to my own devices. The sun don't shine for me now, The rose don't bloom, no, no, no, Since my baby left me, The sun don't shine no more.

On postcards of buildings fly the flags of many nations which you send me, Falsehoods on four winds from unsung and faraway places, Distance breeds lies and those lies crystallise what I feel, You say you still love me but from here I get the idea it's a lie. Crocodile tears at the station, ripping at my heart, Crocodile tears tearing me apart - end of another fresh start. You left me with nothing but the taste of gum on my tongue, From letters to places with beaches, blue oceans and sun, I said that I love you, God knows I tried! You say you still love me, but you're always saying "Goodbye". Crocodile tears at the airport, ripping at my heart, Crocodile tears tearing me apart - end of another fresh start. You said you must leave but you wouldn't say why you were going, I looked into your eyes but my heart had no way of knowing, I said that I love you, God knows I tried! You say you still loved me, but you're always saying "Goodbye". Crocodile tears at the station, ripping at my heart, Crocodile tears tearing me apart - oh! Crocodile tears at the airport, ripping at my heart, Crocodile tears tearing me apart - end of another fresh start, Of another fresh start, Of another fresh start, Another fresh start, Another fresh start.

The events of yesterday, Are described in an offhand way, And these, the men of destiny, Echo heroic versions of the past. In Japan an automaton claims a victim! And they're shaken but not stirred, As if they never heard, The World described in pictures, Real life is just a scream away, Put your hopes and dreams away, Stay at home, the ideal drone, And watch real life and death, And be shaken not stirred. I live in the world of cages, Mutants prowl the streets, I haven't left my room in ages, Thermo-static keeps it nice and warm. In Japan an automaton claims a victim! And they're shaken but not stirred, As if they never heard, The World described in pictures, Real life is just a scream away. Put your hopes and dreams away, Stay at home, the ideal drone, And watch real life and death, And be shaken but not stirred.

Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "Can I try your wares?" Hot cross buns, double cross buns, Same old tale with the same old end, Same old story with the same outcome, You've got to look out, Look out - look out and look out, For the sting in the tale, Sting in the tale... Duke of York had ten thousand men, Marched them round and around again. Marched them up to the top of the hill, Men got killed and the Duke went riding home again. Ten thousand voices calling - "Look out!" For the sting in the tale, Sting in the tale... Simple Simon and the pie man, Duke of York and his men, Giants and ogres and the boys in blue, Same old story with the whole damn crew, Same old tale with the same old end, Same old story with the same outcome, You've got to look out, Look out-look out, and look out, Look out - look out and look out - look out And look out - look out and look out, For the sting in the tale, Sting in the tale.

Marimba Jive 05:20
They've got ways to dislocate a culture Boss your soul and make you look so much older Shine a light in your pale eyes Loose the truth in a complex of lies The brutalist tradition. They try to keep my marimba under Sap her strength and steal her thunder We wanna rock, we wanna roll, we wanna rumba Dance another dance and roll another number - yeah Imperial tradition. The land is rich but the country's barren The table top and the golden hem The wire tap, the rule of the baton They need marimba just to liberate them Apartheid tradition. So strike a note on the x-y-i-lophone Strike a chord in the coldest heart Marimba jive - jive and survive! Marimba rings long distance Join the birds and fly south for the winter.

Slow To Fade 03:56
You've been around so long Living a lie I've been doing nothing Now its time to try Time to try Oh time to try I know the reefs surrounding Your ivory coast I take my flask of courage And drink a final toast I'll drink a toast to you A final toast They say that time's a great healer And I've tried to forget But time won't erase you You're slow to fade Slow to fade Oh slow to fade The dreams you dream are the dreams of tomorrow The tears you cry are the tears of today The dreams you dream are the dreams of tomorrow The tears you cry are the tears of today And you say You've been around so long Living a lie I've been doing nothing Now its time to try They say that time's a great healer And I've tried to forget But time won't erase you You're slow to fade Its time to try - time to try Slow to fade

about

Red Guitars Hull, UK

Red Guitars were a product of the vibrant Hull music scene of the late 1970s. Encouraged by a review of their demo tape in the Melody Maker the band recorded a single, Good Technology, and released it on their own Self Drive label. John Peel played it on the radio, Tyne Tees Television filmed them for the Tube and Johnny Marr invited them to tour with the Smiths. They were up and running. ... more
